Why evolving consciousness in business?

The traditional business growth model is now being reconsidered, as we can all witness its negative impact on our planet. Just take the average CEO-to-worker pay ratio as an example (up to 434 to 1)¹! More than ever, there is a need for businesses to consider not only its needs, but also the needs of the environment, society and human beings.

The economic system drives most business leaders to manage “things” such as projects and budgets, and they are tired of it! They had to put aside the very reason why they wanted to contribute in the first place, as their connexion with their employees. Stuck in the spiral of constant pressure, they set aside money for human development such as EAP, training and coaching, because they have to, not necessarily because they want to. Survival is in stake.

Many leaders are now sharing their discontent with the better and faster way of doing business². Even though they may have reached success, they are not happier. In fact, they’re often exhausted and prisoners of a life that does not feel like their own. The constant high performance needed to succeed now days forced them to control their emotions and ignore their exhaustion. They are now on a quest for meaning, questioning the growth model at all costs and its overconsumption consequences. They have no choice to look for a new direction as survival is no longer the way to go. More and more leaders are now discovering that well-being, coherence and courage are the values that will bring them to reinvent a business world that works for all.

It is time for a paradigm shift. Now is when we need to invest in our most important asset: human beings. Time has come for all to begin evolving consciousness in business.

When an organization puts consciousness first, growth is no longer an objective, but a result. It becomes a source of motivation and gratitude. Actions are oriented on the very reason why the enterprise was constituted and on the well-being of all stakeholders.

Developing consciousness in business offers new refreshing perspectives. One, being prisoners of what we call our box of conditioning (see image) or our ego/personality is the first reason for our dissatisfaction and exhaustion. We spend so much energy to take care of our security, belonging and credibility needs. Yet, we do it all the time, unconsciously. There can’t be any efficiency in that state, of course.  Second, we spend whatever little energy left to perform, while protecting what we have. Third, we are not present, nor are we truly efficient, even though we’d like others to think so. We give ourselves the impression of being in action, moving forward building momentum, only to realize it was all smoke and mirrors. We are all stuck in survival mode.

On the other hand, when we are present, conscious, using our box of conditioning so we can make the right decision for all, we become who we truly are getting maximum results using minimal energy. We offer trust, and it is offered back to us. This is when we can have 286 % better results than competition (return on investment), according to “The speed of trust” by Steven H.R. Covey. This is the essence of the culture transformation we offer, the Zone for Higher Performance (ZHP) neuroscientific model.
